The “Casa do Forno” building was in the past
one of the community ovens of Salvaterra do Extremo, a little town located in
the border municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, right next to Spain.
Abandoned for decades, the building was almost
down to ruins and the roof didn’t stand the passing of time. Fortunately, the
oven’s dome was intact, preserving its old fashion construction. This oven in
particular has a heating chamber apart from the baking chamber which allows the
floor of the oven to be kept clean even after several usages. The original
construction was kept and today, in this place, you’ll find the Geo-Bakery of
“Casa do Forno” where the traditional bread is still done following ancient
recipes in this centennial oven…
During the reconstruction, another floor was
added. There you can find the rooms. In “Casa do Forno” you wake up in the
morning with the aroma of fresh baked bread. Come downstairs for breakfast and
you will be able to have it with some homemade jams…
