VOCAB LIST: People in the Government
president– the leader of a country (usually elected, like in the USA)
vice president– the second most powerful person (after the president)
prime minister– the leader of a country (usually appointed, like in the UK)
monarch– a king or queen
dictator– a person who controls a country by force
legislator– one of the people who makes the laws in a country (usually in a “legislature”)
Senator (US)– legislators in the US Senate
Minister of Parliament (UK)– legislators in the UK Parliament
governor– the leader of a state
mayor– the leader of a city
representative– any person who represents other people (presidents, governors, and mayors are all examples of representatives)
Secretary (US) / Minister (UK)– a person appointed by the president/prime minister to lead a department in the government
citizen– a “member” of a country; a person born in a particular country who has certain rights
voter– a person (citizen) who votes for the representatives (in a democracy)
