Do I Qualify?

How Do I Know If I Qualify For Disability Benefits in Connecticut?

Many times clients wonder if they are even insured for Social Security Disability Insurance Programs. The Social Security Disability Insurance Program is a federally run program, and an individual must pay into the system through their work wages for a number of quarters to even be entitled to receive benefits in the event that they become disabled or they retire.  Generally speaking, a person must work twenty calendar quarters out of forty quarters to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.  That number of quarters worked can be reduced if the person is younger.  Basically you need to have about ten years of consistent work experience to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance.

How do you find out if you are entitled to these monthly benefits in the event that you do become disabled?

Well, years ago we used to receive our earnings statements in the mail.  You will remember that they were green bordered statements that would say how much we had made over the years, our different work history jobs and it would also say how much you could get per month if you become disabled, retired or choose to retire early.  Now the whole system is electronic and your earnings statement is only available online so if you want to know if you have worked enough and paid into the system enough to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance I encourage you to go to the Social Security website ( www.ssa.gov ).  There is a link there that you can press and it will enable you to request your earnings statement online and whether or not you are entitled to disability insurance.
