Education & Background
F. Alan Barber grew up in northeast Oklahoma, where he excelled at both sports and academics in high school and first became interested in medicine. A member of the state championship swim team and an Eagle Scout, he was honored to be selected to attend Boys State, and spent his senior year in Madrid, Spain.
He was awarded a four-year Army ROTC scholarship and attended Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with honors and was designated as a distinguished military graduate. After being commissioned in the U.S. Army, Dr. Barber received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and subsequently completed his orthopedic surgery training at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, where he met his wife, Sherry.
Dr. Barber served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army at hospitals throughout the U.S. and Europe — and as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery in both Germany and at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. At William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, he served on the Orthopedic Surgery residency program faculty. Before leaving the Army with the rank of Lt. Colonel, he received the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award (one of three that year) and the Berg-Sloat Traveling Fellowship Award from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation. Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Barber completed a fellowship in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery in Dallas, Texas.
In Dallas, Dr. Barber has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and for many years as team physician for both Richardson and Berkner High Schools. In addition, he is an Instructional Course Lecturer for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a Master Instructor at the Orthopaedic Learning Center (AAOS/AANA) for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has also served on the board of directors of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He is the Fellowship Director emeritus for the Plano Orthopedic Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship (an ACGME credentialed program).
Dr. Barber has published over 250 scientific journal articles in the area of biologics, biomechanics, and clinical sports medicine; written several book chapters; served as the shoulder section editor of Operative Arthroscopy; and is the editor of Surgical Techniques for the Shoulder and Elbow. He is also a reviewer for several journals; an associate editor emeritus of the Arthroscopic Journal, which also named him Journal Reviewer of the Year; and a current member of the Arthroscopy Journal editorial board. He is also currently the associate editor for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review.
Dr. Barber is a frequent lecturer in both the United States and internationally — and has been an instructional course lecturer at meetings of the AAOS, AOSSM, and AANA. His clinical practice experience is extensive, having performed over 16,000 surgeries since joining Plano Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. He has been featured numerous times in D Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors in Dallas”, “Best Doctors of Collin County,” and on Texas Monthly’s list of “Super Doctors.”
He and Sherry have three children and seven grandchildren. He is actively involved in scouting, and enjoys skiing, hiking, and ballroom dancing. He continues to pursue his interest in “high-pointing” and has reached the highest point of 44 states.
