Breezes Newspaper
Working on the school newspaper is a full year activity that includes a few summer hours, especially in the two weeks prior to the start of the school year. Time commitment varies, depending on roles– around 20 hours a month is standard for editors, and three to five hours a month for writers. In a typical year, ten regular, 8-20 page issues are published, with the possibility of additional “specials.”
Under the guidance of an advisor, students write, edit and produce the paper - both a print and online edition. Breezes manages a budget and raises funds through advertising and various group fundraisers. The staff consists of about 15 editors, 30 staff writers, artists, photographers and ads team members. There is also the opportunity to be an occasional, contributing writer. Editor and manager positions are filled through an application process in late April/early May. Writers, photographers, and artists from all grades are welcome and information is available at both the fall and spring Activities Fair, as well as throughout the year.
Meetings are in the Breezes Office at MHS (2420-A), and all work is done before or after school or on students’ own time over some weekends. Students interested in working on the paper are encouraged to sign up for VANTAGE Multimedia Communications, but no prior journalism experience is required. This is an inclusive community of curious thinkers and writers!
